Transporting the World’s Largest Lime Kiln – a Special Project Requiring Precision, Power, and Careful Planning

At the beginning of 2022, we carried out a unique and challenging transport project, moving the world’s largest recovery furnace from Ii to the Metsä Fibre pulp mill in Kemi. Our client was Ii Konepaja Oy, and the project was part of our long-term collaboration. The project lasted approximately six months and required careful planning and expertise in transporting heavy machinery.

The furnace weighed a total of 700 tonnes and was divided into seven sections. The heaviest section weighed 120 tonnes, and all sections had a diameter of 6 meters, with lengths ranging from 7 meters to 33 meters. The project also included moving the sections within the workshop before the actual transport. Each transport took about four hours, and we had to make modifications along the route, including widening some junctions.

The main challenges of the project were the enormous size and weight of the sections, which placed demands on our equipment and route planning. We carefully studied the route and planned the sections’ dimensions together with Ii Konepaja to ensure a safe and efficient transport.

For the transport, we used a Goldhofer modular trailer with a 3+8 axle combination, which allowed the massive sections to be moved safely. The successful completion of the project strengthened our position as a reliable and skilled partner for heavy and special transports in Finland.

Projects like this require meticulous planning, close collaboration with the client, and professional use of equipment to ensure that heavy loads are delivered safely, even under challenging conditions.
